Basics Class (12
yrs-old and older)
This class is open to all ranks and emphasizes basic movements
including footwork, ukemi (falling skills), and basic techniques.
Techniques are presented at a pace which allows beginning students
to develop an understanding of movement with the emphasis on balance,
coordination, and stability. As the students become more comfortable
with their movement, basic techniques can be practiced more fluidly
and dynamically.
This class is open to all ranks and all are encouraged to attend
regularly. Beginners can use this class to "get their feet wet,"
and intermediate-level students can use this class to reinforce
their basics. Middle-kyu level and yudansha (blackbelts) are encouraged
to attend to train with the beginners.
General Class
(12 yrs-old and older)
This class is more dynamic than the basics class, although basic
principles of techniques are still covered regularly. Techniques
are presented at a more advanced level, and multiple variations
of the techniques are introduced. Also, development of "blending"
with the attack is emphasized in these classes (versus static
attacks.
Due to the dynamic nature of the techniques, the development
of supple and effective ukemi is also stressed. As the students
advance in their level of practice, Henkawaza (switching techniques),
Randori (practice with multiple partners, Jiu-waza (freestyle),
and Kaishewaza (reversing techniques) may be incorporated.
Children's
Class (7 yrs. to 11-yrs-old)
This class is tailored to meet the needs of young children for learning
the art of Aikido. Warm-ups and drills are designed to stimulate
coordination, awareness, flexibility, stamina, and strength appropriate
for their growing minds and bodies. Techniques are taught with their
growing joints in mind. Discipline, respect, and perseverance are
emphasized as part of this curriculum. Of course, safety is always
a pinnacle concern for this group.
Parents of students are encouraged to get on the mat with their
children to enhance the learning experience of both.
Weapons
Class
The weapons portion of class is included with the regular adults
classes. The weapons used in these classes are: the bokken (wooden
sword), the jo (wooden staff), and the tanto (wooden knife). This
aspect of training emphasizes: weapon handling, footwork with
the weapon, weapon-to-weapon techniques, empty hand-to-weapon
techniques, and ukemi with the weapon. More advanced students
will work with multiple weapons attacks as well.
